little girls
i was a little girl once.
i know how it felt
to have all of the eyes watching you
almost expecting you to make a wrong move
so that they could tut tut and move on
while you sat
cheeks flaming
heart ablaze.
i was a little girl once.
i remember all the dreams and the fancies
and all my heart's desires
bundled up in my treasure chest
now crusty with rust.
i was a little girl once.
oh, the ambition'
the 'i'm nothing like my mother'
the teasing,
life changing
crushes and forlorn should-have beens.
it's that time where i reflect that
little girls grow up to be strong women
child bearers
child rearers
educators
path breakers
wayfinders
life savers.
i was a little girl once,
and so was every woman i have ever come across life.
we all had our fanicies
and our little dreams
that helped us coast through life'
and be the iconic shit that we are.
